Episode 20. Meeting Deborah Frances White, The rise of NRL in WA, Taste testing a new non alcoholic spirit and American Love Story's dreadful PR pics.

The 4 P's of our Week... our Peak, Pit, Plug and the thing we're Pondering.

Hi friends,

We’ve been a bit slack in recording, but thanks to a push by a couple of people, we’re back! And we really missed it.

We’re been working more than the fabulous five hours that we strive for after being introduced to the term by this icon:

Last week we were busy with Black Swan State Theatre Company’s season opening of the fabulous and somewhat divisive play Never Have I Ever by the formidable Deborah Frances-White.

Never Have I Ever is the searingly funny, high-stakes debut play from The Guilty Feminist podcast creator, comedian and author. But dont take our word for it… it was described by our other idol Phoebe Waller-Bridge as "Hilarious, irreverent, eternally surprising, classy as hell and genius". This show provokes, entertains, and lingers long after the curtain call…. clearly, here we are talking about it yet again.

The writing is right up our alley and we loved both interpretations that we’ve seen this year… the first by Melbourne Theatre Company, and the second here in Perth by Black Swan. OBVIOUSLY if you’re in Perth book tickets… don’t be insane, just do it.

Secondly, we’re thrilled to report that DFDubz is just as smart and disarming, open and engaging as you would hope… they say never meet your heroes but they were wrong in this case. Obsessed. It’s our Peak of the week.

Here is the link to Deborah’s latest book Six Conversations We’re Scared to Have - we are both about to buy this!

Finally, here is DFW’s great spot on The Project a few weeks ago…Lots to ponder here!

Next up is our Pit of the week… and it’s those shockingly bad PR photos from Ryan Murpy’s upcoming production of American Love Story. They’re so bad… from her hair colour to the dreadful styling… that CI has a theory that its a deliberate move to garner discussion and create a viral moment… and discuss we have. Ryan has addressed the conversation this week… see below. What are your thoughts? Do you even care?

For our Plug of the week… we sampled two of the new Barnes & Brown non-alcoholic beverages and we loved them. You can whiz them up into a cocktail recipe but we both thought they were so yummy we would literally sip with ice and a slice of lemon or whatever… particularly the Lady Marmalade. Delicious. Zara has claimed this one… expect to be served a glass when you’re next at her house.

Lady Juniper Gin

  • Enjoy aromas of juniper, black pepper, and lemon myrtle with subtle floral notes. Savour flavours of bitter orange peel along with a strong dry, slightly spicy aftertaste.

  • Lady Marmalade Triple Sec

    • Savour flavours of liquorice, earthy bitter roots with a spicy aftertaste.

Lastly we’re Pondering the rise of NRL in WA. We got to attend the State of Origin last week at Optus Stadium…. along with 57,023 other people. And man was it a vibe (see the video link below). The NRL really do it right. Now neither of us are what we would call big sporting fans…. but we do love being entertained and that’s what they do well. Caitlin grew up in Qld where NRL is a religion… and the SOO is the conclave to decide who is top dog each year…. it was a family tradition to watch and the only time both Caitlin’s mum and her both watched the game with the boys also.

Our job means we’ve been lucky enough to organise and attend both NRL and AFL games with talent who are performing and its a truly money cant buy experience to stand on the ground, feel the vibration of a crowd that big and cover your ears from the fireworks and pyrotechnics that the NRL in particular do so well. It’s theatre at the end of the day… pure entertainment… and thats why we love it. The excitement in the air is palpable… bring on the Perth Bears first game!

Lastly check out gorgeous Shubshri Kandiah (above) who is currently starring as Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast singing the anthem at Game 2. After a sold out Australian tour…. Perth tickets are on sale now from Ticketmaster! This is the last chance to see the Aussie production… and its a cracker. Truly Disney magic that is not to be missed. So dont!

That’s all for now. Much love.

C&Z

xx
