Episode 21: Our Peak, Pit, Passion, Plug and the thing we're Pondering this week.

We talk Eva Peron vs Snow White, singing to your veggie garden, Zara's wrap of the best sets on sale currently, her obsession with kerchiefs, and we taste test a sparkling alcoholic coconut water.

Hi lovely friends,

We’re back talking all things pop culture good and bad, fashion including best sale sets and some woo woo beliefs.

Cait’s Peak of the Week was watching Disney’s Snow White on a flight. Full disclosure - I was prepared to hate watch it and only watched it because there was nothing else … but was surprised to find I loved it and have been humming ‘Waiting on a Wish’ non stop.

Our Pit of The Week is Rachel Zegler’s annoying behaviour giving us a touch of the ‘Anne Hathaway’s’ as always. My specific annoyance this week stemmed from the below recent video on social media:

Rachel Zegler has publicly criticised Snow White for being too soft and outdated - calling the character passive, creepy, and not a role model for modern girls. That criticism rubbed many the wrong way, including us. Not just because people love the original story, but because it seemed ungracious to tear down a character you’ve accepted the job of portraying - especially when that role is helping further your career.

Now, cast as Eva Perón in Evita, Zegler is praising her as an icon of strength, resilience, and glamour - seemingly glossing over the complexities: authoritarian ties, political aggression, and a polarising legacy.

One was passive fiction. The other is real life divisive history. Snow White may be outdated, but Eva Perón wielded real-world power, impacted millions, and supported a regime that jailed and silenced dissent. It’s one thing to modernise a fairy tale. It’s another to sanitise a legacy.

To us, it feels like selective feminism - criticising femininity in fiction, while celebrating boldness in history without acknowledging its cost. Zegler seems to reframe Eva not as a flawed political figure but as a symbol of empowerment. That’s dangerously simplistic for a woman whose legacy includes state oppression.

Yes, Rachel is a young actress navigating Hollywood, internet feminism, cancel culture, and corporate branding. But on this one…. she’s treating fiction with more moral scrutiny than history. Ok… rant over. We think.

We’ve been Pondering the concept of talking to trees…. stay with us… There is a book and doco of the same name called The Hidden Life of Trees which Im adding to my watch and read list.

And I found articles in publications like The New Yorker dating back to 1973 that gives instructions for talking to vegetables to make them thrive. The writer cites the personalities of various "veggies," pointing out that what you say, or even what you think around your vegetables & herbs can be critical in their formation & development. It includes quotes from the "East West Journal," a monthly devoted to the coddling of vegetables, & puts vegetable raising in the context of Indian philosophy & religion. It details music & conversation preferred by various plants, & even describes how to prepare them for their death. Probably going a bit far for me… but my point is this is not a new concept and must have some merit if people the world over, in different cultures, over decades have come to the same conclusion. Jennifer Garner even sings to hers! Anyone else tried this? Dm us!

Our Plug of the Week is taste testing this alcoholic coconut water. Their spiel is: Rainbird has teamed up with H2coco to bring you the ultimate Alcoholic Sparkling Coconut Water, with vodka and a hint of natural flavour. It's perfectly balanced, refreshing and totally delicious. Perfect for a summer day or kicking back with friends, Rainbird x H2coco Alcoholic Sparkling Coconut Water has got you covered. Get them from Dan Murphys. We particularly loved the pineapple flavour. Sounds about right :)
